Hello & thanks for stopping by! My name is Annika & I am the calligrapher behind Karis Calligraphy. I am from Seattle, WA, but currently live in Princeton, NJ, with my husband Gray - we moved here in 2015 after our wedding (details here!) for Gray to go to grad school.
I've always loved a handwritten sentiment; from the time I could hold a pen, I've been writing notes and letters but I never imagined that I would open a shop for these paper goods. I'm so grateful for the support of sweet family & friends who have encouraged me to pursue calligraphy. It started as a hobby - a Christmas gift, actually, from Gray. The more I practiced, the more I loved it - & I mean loved it. Soon I had my first commissioned project from a friend, and then another, and then another...and then I opened an Etsy shop.
So - why "Karis"? Charis, or Karis, is the Greek word for grace; specifically grace that supplies joy, delight, sweetness, & loveliness in speech. As I have written piece after piece to be given as gifts from me to friends, friends to friends, strangers to their friends, I can't help but think that this is what calligraphy is in its words and beauty and hand made form.
It's been so much fun building a small business and I'm so thankful for friends who challenge me to create new things.
If you're thinking about a design or a project, I'd love to work with you! I'm so glad you're here.
